Drug testing employees is often a difficult subject to approach for a number of reasons.
First and foremost, you don’t want to give people the impression that you don’t trust them.
Next, you have a commitment that you’ve made to your employees and customers to keep them safe and free from harm.
With that being said, there is a time and a place for workplace drug testing. Here is when it most often occurs in an employment setting.
When It’s Time for Workplace Drug Testing
During pre-employment screenings.
Drug testing lets you know upfront if an employee abuses drugs or alcohol. This prevents any potentially harmful events from occurring on your property because you don’t have to extend an offer of employment to a candidate who failed the pre-screening drug test.
If you suspect an employee is under the influence of drugs and alcohol, you can ask them to submit drug testing results to you. If you do find that they are abusing substances while at work, you can take the steps necessary to get them help or let them go depending on how your policies and procedures are written out.
If an employee had an accident due to drug and alcohol abuse, it must be noted on their file. This allows you to take disciplinary action against them without breaking the law. If an employee agrees that he or she will be drug-free while working for you, a positive test result states that they’ve failed to honor that commitment to you.
Before returning to work.
If an employee has missed work due to an accident or illness, it’s important to see if they were abusing drugs and alcohol while away from the job. This type of drug testing doesn’t take place regularly but it is an option.
Drug testing in the workplace is a necessary practice. It helps safeguard your employees from violence and accidents. It lets you know which employees will be a good fit for your workplace culture before you hire them and which ones don’t take working for you seriously.
