Substance abuse and relationships go together like vinegar and baking soda: eventually something is going to bubble over, and it’s going to get messy. ┬áDrug use may seem harmless at first, and it may even be fun. However, what starts with a few too many beers every now and again, or the occasional joint can end in disaster with at best, hurt feelings or at worse, death. When substance abuse becomes pervasive and ongoing, it affects everyone who comes in contact with the user, and especially the ones who love the addict the most.

Drugs Dominate the Situation

Recreational drug use can move into full-on addiction. When those drugs or alcohol become the most compelling part of the addict’s life, all interpersonal relationships go by the wayside. Many addicts think about getting their fixes before they think about the welfare of their children or spouses. They turn to the substance whenever they feel anything good, bad or neutral.

Emotional Ups and Downs

As the drugs take control of the useer, his or her relationships gradually destruct. The addict will keep secrets like spending rent or food money on booze and drugs, or sneaking out in the middle of the night to make such purchases.

The addict becomes a different person emotionally. Drugs take the person further and further down the spiral, draining any relationshiip’s life along the way. Some addicts become defensive, others become abusive. People become mean or paranoid.

The First Step

While the situation may seem hopeless, there can be light at the end of the tunnel. Many recovery programs are out there, the user just has to seek them, find the right one for him or her, and make sure to follow its guidance.

If you or someone you love shows signs of addiction, find your nearest ARCpoint Labs location for discrete drug testing. The path to recovery begins with a single step.
